There are many reasons why people want coaching. Your reason will be unique, and it may also be similar to many other people I have coached.
Some people see a coach because they want to make their life more complete. Often they do not know what it is, yet they can tell that their life is missing something. Coaching can help you to identify what the gap is, and how you can fill that gap.
Some people see a coach because they want to find work that is more fulfilling. They may have been in their existing career for a while, and do not want to spend the rest of their lives in it. Often they cannot work out what they would like to do, and how they can make such a change in their life. Coaching can help you understand what really interests you, and how you can use it to generate an income.
Some people see a coach because they want richer relationships. Relationships are challenging. We need to tend to ourselves, and also the people we are in relationship with. We constantly change, and so the relationship is constantly changing. Finding support for this can be difficult. Coaching can help you remove the “noise” which gets in the way of relationships, and help you focus and resolve the underlying matters.
Some people see a coach because they want support in a non-judgemental environment. With all of the best intentions, our family, friends and colleagues can find it difficult to support us in an unconditional, non-judgemental way. It can be difficult to find someone who will listen to us without bringing their own issues into the conversation. Coaching provides an environment where the coach’s only agenda is to help you realise your potential.
Some people see a coach because they want to resolve issues in the work place. Issues at work can be difficult to resolve. Confidentiality means that it is not possible to discuss things in the office. Our positions can mean that it is not appropriate for us to admit our confusion and uncertainty. We don’t always want to take these conversations home with us. Coaching provides you with an opportunity to talk openly and frankly about an issue. The coaching can be extended to other members of your team, where the impartiality of the coach can encourage honesty and resolution.
Some people see a coach because they are seeking clarity. Sometimes life at home and work just gets a little bit confusing. We can’t quite remember what we were trying to achieve. We might have a lot of options which are alright, but none which are great. We might not see any options at all. Coaching can slow down your thinking, remove the panic, and help you find clarity more quickly.
There is no right or wrong reason for wanting coaching. There is your reason.
